This project aims to develop an AI-powered “TA” tool to provide more timely feedback and real-time customized learning assistance to students in Engineering Economics. The envisioned “TA” tool is a Python-based application that includes a set of practice examples and can provide customized suggestions based on the answers submitted by students to answer the practice problem. For example, when answering a question to calculate the present worth of a project, if the submitted answer seems to be related to having incorrect interest rate, the “TA” tool could tell the students that “You seem to be on the right track but please check to see whether you are using the correct interest rate.” For more complex problems, the “TA” tool can also direct students to examples in course slides or in the textbook that covers the building blocks for solving the problem. The core of this “TA” tool is a machine learning-based classification algorithm that is trained based on historical assignment feedback and common mistakes identified by the instructors. A website has been developed to provide the user interface of this “TA” tool and collect student use data and feedback information for improving the tool. The tool has been developed and tested in the Summer and Fall semesters, respectively.
