Özet

Adorno occupies an important place among philosophers who have expressed views and thoughts on music. From a sociological standpoint, Adorno's statements on music and society casts light on the relationship between these two. Addressing the topics of music and society together, Adorno described that music has been reduced to a tool for manipulating and guiding the masses. He also argued that the perception of music is largely determined by world (or social environment) in which it is heard. Adorno has always opposed the idea of transforming music into an instrument for disseminating any ideology. When asserting that the Culture Industry destroy anything which does not bear its ideology and is not marketable, Adorno was especially referring. With such statements, Adorno suggests that music has been transformed into a commodity, losing its essence and becoming alienated to its own original values in the process, and thus being integrated into capitalist consumption processes. Under the influence of the Culture Industry, music is distancing itself from critical thought, instead becoming caught in a banality and conformity devoid of any logic or thought. By elucidating the relationships between music and society, Adorno has allowed us to think of production, reproduction and distribution processes within the scope of music. Through his assessments on different forms of music, and on the production and distribution of music, Adorno has provided insight into the relationship between music and society. It is therefore possible to say that, by evaluating music and society together, Adorno has laid the foundations of music sociology.
