Özet
The COVID-19 pandemic has deeply affected people’s daily routines, social lives, and working conditions, reshaping everyday life into what is often described as the “new normal”. One of the most affected areas was education. School closures, implemented worldwide to reduce the spread of the virus, made it mandatory to continue instruction through distance education. However, most schools lacked the necessary infrastructure for this education model, and neither students nor teachers were familiar with the technology and pedagogy of online learning. For this reason, this sudden and compulsory transition to distance education brought many difficulties together not only for educational institutions, but also teachers and students who were used to traditional classroom settings. In this process, educators were expected to improve their digital literacy skills, learn to use distance education systems, adapt their teaching materials and strategies to distance education, and find ways to ensure student participation in the online environment. Moreover, they had to struggle with many other difficulties brought about by the pandemic and working from home. These multifaceted challenges further increased the psychological burden on teachers who practice a profession that is already stressful by its nature, and paved the way for many mental health problems, especially burnout. This chapter focuses on the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on education systems as well as educators’ mental health and burnout. Additionally, institutional and political interventions that can be implemented to enhance the well-being of educators in the post-pandemic period are also discussed.
