Abstract

Computer architecture and organization course is a fundamental topic underlying many disciplines, including computer, electrical and electronics engineering departments. The impressive learning process in this course involves both a theoretical and practical part. A FPGA-based micro computer architecture design entitled BZK.SAU.FPGA10.1 was proposed to strengthen computer architecture and organization fundamentals in 2011. Moreover, it is developed an assembler program in. NET platform that allows being able to write user program using the assembly commands of this design. However, uploading process machine code of written assembly program is manually performed. This paper addresses an impressive learning approach that permits one to work on real computer architecture while supporting easily to upload their program using serial port interface instead of manually. The serial port interface in this work has been designed completely schematic design. So this interface allows the students to examine the internal structure of this interface while improving the motivation in the communication protocols. Broad in scope, this work aids the students to advance low-level programming experience in software area in addition to an increase in their learning process in the computer architecture topics.
