The 6th TESOL Türkiye International ELT Conference "Future Proof Learning: Rethinking Education to Inspire and Sustain Tomorrow", Kayseri, Türkiye, 18 - 19 Nisan 2025, ss.48, (Özet Bildiri)
This study employs a process tracing methodology to
explore the evolving mindsets of English language teachers as they integrate translanguaging
practices aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Using a mixed-methods approach, this study began by administering a validated “Teacher
Mindset Scale” to 15 English language teachers whose informed consent was
obtained. This scale was used to establish baseline profiles of the
participants’ openness to innovation and cultural inclusion. Based on the
results of the scale, the participant with a low mindset profile was selected
and invited to take part in a semi-structured interview to get further information
about his perspectives. Then, together with the other teachers, he was engaged
in a series of professional development seminars including translanguaging and practices associated with the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for eight weeks. Utilizing process
tracing, the practices the participant integrated in his teaching were examined
to reveal the causal mechanisms such as reflective practice that enabled the participant’s
mindset transformation
Results revealed that teachers’ mindsets evolve
through complex interactions among socio-cognitive elements, institutional
issues, and intercultural experiences. Initially reluctant teachers
progressively embrace growth-oriented and internationally aware attitudes,
seeing translanguaging as a catalyst for linking learners’ linguistic resources
with urgent sustainability issues. This study elucidates how particular
experiences, guidance, and feedback mechanisms shape mindset development,
offering practical insights for educators, curriculum developers, and
professional development facilitators.
