Internet Use Behavior and Attitude of ELT Students

Özet

The Internet has become an indispensable part of our lives since the beginning of the Millenium. It hasn’t been more than two decades since computers fully entered our lives. When it comes to the internet, it was 1989 when it was first invented but each year the speed of getting surrounded by its use and its benefits increase rapidly.

Although once optional, now it is a must to get internet use education. Starting from an early age, children meet the use of the internet informally. It is only at high school that the students get a formal education on how to use some computer tools and internet tools. Formal education continues at universities. Computer classes are a must at the first class of universities.

In this current study, it is aimed to understand whether the students are given proper education to be able to use the internet in their further studies both at university and after university when they are performing their profession as an English teacher. It is for this reason that the students were given behavior questioneer and were asked to answer the questioneer sincerely. The study examines the level of use of the Internet among ELT students both at a private university and a state university. The attitude towards the use of the internet, the choices that they make while using the internet are also part of the interest topics of the study. The results reveal that the use of the internet is highly practiced by the students and that a considerable amount of ELT students believe that internet knowledge is essential both as a student and as a prospective English teacher. It is highly recommended by the survey takers to educate every student to use basic Internet tools no later than secondary school.
