ICPLTL 25 4TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PSYCHOLOGY FOR LANGUAGE TEACHERS AND LEARNERS, İstanbul, Turkey, 16 - 18 October 2025
The goal of this study is to explore the anxiety experienced by novice English language teachers during classroom oracy practices and how they exercise their agency to cope with or overcome these challenges. The study qualitatively investigated how teachers perceive the challenges they face in oral communication, manage their anxiety, and construct agency in their professional development. Four novice EFL teachers took part in this qualitative study. The participants were determined through purposive sampling from a university, involved in a semi-structured interview. The findings were explored through a content analysis. The results reveal that language instructors develop agency-based behaviors, such as self-observation to explore what strategies work best in coping with their anxiety, emotional self-regulation, and building supportive communities, to overcome oracy-related anxiety. These results highlight the importance of self-awareness, autonomy-supportive interventions in teacher education, and offer suggestions to strengthen teachers’ emotional resilience.
