Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore the basic factors effecting the international tourism demand for Turkey. The study cover the 1970-94 period. Overall, with some exceptions, the variables examined explained a high percentage with expected signs. The results of regression analyses by using different country base indicate that among the key variables inflation (elasticities are ranging from ? 0.33 to ?1.42) and bed capacity (elasticities are ranging from 1.23 to 5.26) were found to be major factors influencing visitors flow to Turkey. In general tourism demand is also responsive to income and exchange rates. Per capita income and exchange rates are found in positively effecting tourism demand for the 5 and 6 out of 11 countries.
