Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI), defined as the capacity of computer systems to perform tasks that require human intelligence, is leading to significant transformations in the healthcare and education sectors today. The midwifery profession and education are also being influenced by this transformation.

AI applications used during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period—such as fetal heart rate monitoring, preterm birth risk prediction, and postpartum hemorrhage risk assessment—support midwives' clinical decision-making processes and enhance the quality of care. Technologies including machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and virtual reality offer personalized learning experiences to midwifery students and provide them with the opportunity to safely experience complex clinical scenarios.

Research indicates that the vast majority of midwifery students support the use of AI in their education and professional lives. However, the integration of AI into midwifery education also brings ethical concerns such as data security, privacy violations, algorithmic biases, misinformation, and the risk of plagiarism. The World Health Organization emphasizes the importance of maintaining ethical principles in the use of AI in healthcare and education.

The literature recommends the integration of AI education into the midwifery curriculum and the development of competencies among educators in this area. It is emphasized that this will foster positive attitudes toward AI technologies among students and enable midwives to take a leadership role in the digital transformation of healthcare services. This review aims to examine the effects of artificial intelligence on the midwifery profession and education in terms of potential applications, opportunities, ethical boundaries, and future perspectives.
