Determination of the Gloss Values of Some Varnishes Applied on the Natural Aged Wood

In this study, the surface gloss values of some varnishes that are naturally aged and applied on new woods were investigated. A total of 360 test samples was prepared, each with 10 repetitions according to the test pattern of each wood type (3), section direction (2), age period (2) and varnish type (3). According to the principles of ASTM-D 3023, two layers of filler and two layers of topcoat varnish for the samples of natural aged and fresh scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), sessile oak (Quercus petrea L.) and chestnut (Castanea sativa M.) wood. applied on silk mat water based, silk mat polyurethane and silk-matte acrylic varnishes with spray gun. The surface gloss of the samples was determined in accordance with the principles in TS EN ISO 2813 standard. According to the test results, the surface gloss was found higher in natural wood (37,14) than natural aged wood (36,45). At the wood species level, the highest was obtained in scotch pine (38.46), while the difference between sessile oak (35.89) and chestnut (36.04) has been insignificant. The highest gloss value at the varnish type level was obtained in the polyurethane varnish (39.88), followed by acrylic varnish (37.20) and water-based varnish (33.32), respectively.
