People in various parts of the world are using various species in genus Brassica as a source of nonedible and edible oil for a very long time. Presently, Brassica species including canola species are the third biggest source of obtaining vegetable oil world over. Generally, B. rapa and B. juncea are cultivated in warm semitropics. B. napus favourably is cultivated in cool temperate regions. Sinapis alba grows as weed everywhere. These species contain high amounts of glucosinolates, erucic acids and linolenic acids and low amount of oleic acid, which is not desirable. Therefore the scientists have suggested their alternative use in the production of quality biofuel as renewable energy source. This study gives comprehensive information about the breeding, botanical, morphological and chemical properties including fatty acid components and biofuel technical properties of the mustard plant species as used in Turkey.
