Abstract
Continuity of care in midwifery is an evidence-based
model that improves maternal and newborn health by providing continuous and
individualised care from pregnancy through the postpartum period, thereby
increasing maternal satisfaction while reducing unnecessary interventions.
Research shows that this model reduces the risk of infection, shortens hospital
stays, and improves neurodevelopmental outcomes, particularly in preterm
newborns. Additionally, it improves the quality of care by enabling midwives to
detect small changes in the newborn early on and reduces parental stress by
strengthening midwife-family communication. However, insufficient resources in
healthcare systems, high staff turnover, and organisational barriers limit the
widespread adoption of continuous care. In order to overcome these obstacles,
it is necessary to strengthen the role of midwives in clinical decision-making
processes, encourage multidisciplinary teamwork, and revise national health
policies to support this model. In short, continuous midwifery care is an
effective model that improves clinical outcomes, reduces the cost-effectiveness
of healthcare services, and increases job satisfaction. This review has
examined the midwifery care continuity model in detail.
