Abstract

The role of literature has been changed in recent years, and it has taken its inevitable place in

the foreign language teaching curriculum. Language classrooms are moving away from

conventional teacher-centered education to student-centered education. Millennium and post-millennium students are now seeking more opportunities to discover their own learning

instead of being directed by an authority. As students are not heavily dependent on teachers,

they have a chance to do a critical reading or analytical reading by giving them authentic

literary texts.

This current study aims to shed a light on why a language teacher should use literary texts in

the foreign language classroom and the benefits of different genres of literature to language

teaching. An application of a play will be presented in order to foster the use of

novels as a literary text in language classrooms.
