Enzymatic Detoxification and Oxidative Stress Responses of Eurygaster integriceps (Hemiptera: Scutelleridae) to Pyrethroids: Implications for Resistance and Pest Management

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate enzymatic detoxification and oxidative stress responses in Eurygaster integriceps (Hemiptera: Scutelleridae), a major pest causing significant economic losses in wheat production, following exposure to pyrethroid insecticides. Fourth-instar nymphs reared on wheat plants under laboratory conditions were treated with cypermethrin, deltamethrin, and lambda-cyhalothrin in a controlled manner. Within the scope of biochemical responses, catalase (CAT), glutathione S‑transferase (GST), and α‑amylase activities, as well as total protein content, were quantified and statistically evaluated. The results indicated that lambda-cyhalothrin exhibited the highest toxicity among the tested insecticides. All treatments increased CAT and GST activities, demonstrating activation of antioxidant defense and detoxification mechanisms. In contrast, reductions in α‑amylase activity and total protein levels were observed, suggesting suppression of digestive and metabolic functions. The intensification of enzymatic responses with increasing doses highlights the significance of sublethal effects on physiological processes. Overall, the findings suggest that enhanced detoxification and antioxidant responses may contribute to pyrethroid tolerance in E. integriceps, providing valuable insights for the development of more effective and sustainable pest management strategies.
