Özet
Ruminant
bölümde, alternatif ve fonksiyonel yem kaynaklarının ruminantlarda in vitro
sindirilebilirlik, fermantasyon karakteristikleri ve metan üretimi üzerindeki
etkileri güncel literatür ışığında derlenmiştir. Ele alınan materyaller;
Metodolojik açıdan in vitro teknikler, çok sayıda materyalin hızlı,
düşük maliyetli ve etik açıdan avantajlı biçimde ön elenmesine olanak tanısa
da, gözlenen etkilerin genellikle in vivo koşullardan daha belirgin
olması, laboratuvar bulgularının hayvan denemeleriyle doğrulanmasını zorunlu
kılmaktadır.

In ruminant livestock production, enteric methane poses a
two-fold problem, as it accounts for a significant part of the global
greenhouse gas burden and also leads to the loss of a substantial amount of the
gross energy intake from feed. In this chapter, the effects of alternative and
functional feed sources on in vitro digestibility, fermentation
characteristics and methane production in ruminants have been reviewed in the
light of the current literature. The materials examined include agricultural
by-products, insect-derived proteins, seaweeds and microalgae, lignocellulosic
tree leaves, and functional additives such as saponins, tannins, essential
oils, 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP), nitrate, biochar and probiotics. The findings
reveal considerable differences in effectiveness among the materials. The red
seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis exhibits the strongest anti-methanogenic
effect due to its bromoform content; however, it presents serious limitations
in terms of safety, residues and sustainable supply. Insect-based proteins
offer both nutritional value and moderate methane reduction; whereas, the
efficacy of plant-based compounds such as saponins and tannins remains highly
dependent on the source and dosage. The synthetic inhibitor 3-NOP stands out as
the most mature option due to its specific target and proven efficacy; biochar
yields inconsistent results, while probiotics provide an indirect contribution
by improving fermentation efficiency rather than through direct inhibition. All
these findings point to a common principle: strategies that most strongly
suppress methanogenesis often also reduce feed digestibility and intake;
consequently, the primary objective is to find a sustainable balance that
preserves digestibility. From a methodological perspective, although in
vitro techniques allow for the rapid, low-cost and ethically advantageous
screening of a large number of materials, the fact that the observed effects
are generally more pronounced than under in vivo conditions makes it
essential for laboratory findings to be verified through animal trials.
