ABSTRACT

Objective: Circumcision, one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures, has a long history and is an integral part of

various religious, cultural and social contexts today. This study was carried out with the aim of evaluating the perspectives of parents

on circumcision.

Materials and Methods: The study was carried out with the qualitative research method. Ethics committee approval was obtained

before the study was conducted. The research was carried out with 24 parents with a boy who volunteered to participate in the

study between July and August 2022. Data were collected using a sociodemographic data form and a semi-structured data form. In

the study, quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were analyzed through thematic coding.

Results: In the study, it was determined that 84.6% of the children decided to be circumcised together by the parents, and 19% of the

children were circumcised as a result of medical necessity. All of the parents whose children were circumcised stated that they would

have their children circumcised again if they had the chance to return. In the study, qualitative data were collected under 4 themes.

“Reason for wanting to have the child circumcised”, “Reasons for anxiety about circumcision”, “Benefits and harms of circumcision

for the child”, Circumcision and the right of the child”. In the study, parents stated that they had their children circumcised because

they thought it was a religious requirement and beneficial for health. The majority of the parents stated that they do not think that

circumcision is a violation of the right of the child, and that the decision of the child by postponing it until adulthood may cause psychological

problems. A parent’s statement regarding this was as follows: “I find it unnecessary not to be circumcised until adulthood,

because as the age gets older, his body will also grow and I think he will have social and psychological problems. Another parent stated

that “I don’t think circumcision is a matter of choice”.

Conclusion: In this study, it was determined that parents circumcised their children for religious reasons. It is recommended that

pediatric nurses inform parents about circumcision of their children in appropriate conditions and conditions.
