Özet

VÜKELA STEAMSHİP
This was a service operated by the Şirket-i Hayriye steamships between Boğaziçi and Sirkeci
in the second half of the 19th century. It was the service that picked up government officials
from their waterfront villas and brought them to Istanbul. During the Tanzimat period
(1839–1876), the Şirket-i Hayriye allocated special scheduled steamships to facilitate the
travel of the viziers and officials of the Bâbıâli who resided in the villages along the
Bosphorus to and from Istanbul. These ships were faster than those of other companies and
their interiors were tastefully decorated.
During the reign of Abdulaziz (1861–1876), the Vükela steamship, which operated on a
regular basis, set sail from Kanlıca. Ali Pasha and Yusuf Kamil Pasha, who lived in Bebek,
along with other dignitaries, would arrive by boat and board the steamship. After calling at a
few summer piers, it was approaching the Vezir Pier in Sirkeci. The dock staff would greet
the Vükela Steamship; the pashas and officials would disembark in order of rank and duty,
board the carriages waiting for them, and proceed to the Grand Vizier’s Office and the
ministries. Keçecizade Fuad Pasha would bring his guests on the Vükela Steamship at night.
Conversations and exchanges on the Vükela steamship were extremely respectful and
civilised. The captain would sound the ship’s horn whenever a vizier boarded the vessel.
During the reign of Abdulhamid II (1876–1909), the Vükela steamship ceased operations.
Instead, a barge was allocated for this purpose. Some time later, the side cabins on the
company’s steamships were reserved for viziers and other high-ranking state officials.
