Özet

The purpose of this research was to improve students’ perceptions of the usefulness of today’snumber system by comparing it to its Babylonian counterpart and to show them that mathematics is amulticultural and dynamic discipline. The study utilized the case study method, which is a qualitative researchapproach. Participants were 27 grade eight students from Trabzon. Worksheets were distributed to students andthe research was conducted in 3 class hours. Student views on the activities were obtained throu gh a writtenfeedback form consisting of 3 questions. The data collected from the written feedback form were analyzedthrough content analysis. As a result, the majority of the students concluded that writing the Babyloniannumerals was both difficult and time-consuming, and that our number system was more practical. Additionally, they were surprised to learn that the Pythagorean relation had been previously developed by Babylonians. Somestudents also grasped the multicultural and dynamic nature of mathematics.
