Özet

Biopesticides derived from plants are environmentally safe substitutes for chemical pesticides. This study investigated how the methanol extract of Medicago sativa L. (alfalfa) affects the larvae of the wax moth (Galleria mellonella) by measuring mortality rate, acetylcholinesterase activity and oxidative stress factors. Larvae were treated with varying concentrations of methanol extract and after 24, 48 and 72 hours of exposure, larvae were collected for biochemical analysis. Larvae that had been treated with methanol extracts had significantly higher mortality rates than control larvae, in a concentration-dependent manner. Treating larvae with methanol extracts produced statistically significant changes in acetylcholinesterase activity following exposure, suggesting that the extracts may have neurotoxic properties. Analysis of oxidative stress indicated that larvae treated with methanol extracts exhibited greater amounts of lipid peroxidation and alterations in the parameters of their antioxidant defense system. Our results indicate that methanol extracts of Medicago sativa are likely to exhibit significant biopesticidal activity against Galleria mellonella via the induction of oxidative stress and through mechanisms mediated by neurophysiology.
